This one is sold as an empty box, and the thing worth understanding before ordering is that it comes in two heights eight euros apart, and the cheaper one closes three doors permanently. The taller case is the only one that accepts Asus's expansion plates: a second 2.5-gigabit network port, an RS232 serial port, or a carrier that extends the second drive slot from 42 millimetres to full length. The connectors those plates use are soldered to both boards; the short case simply has nowhere to bring them out. Note what the drive accessory does, because one reviewer described it the other way round: it does not add a slot, it lengthens the one that is already there. Two more things to plan for. The Arc graphics require both memory slots populated — that is a footnote in Asus's table and an assembly instruction in practice — and the second drive slot is 42 millimetres unless you buy the carrier. In its quiet firmware profile the fan genuinely stops at the desktop. Under load the processor sits near 100 °C without losing speed, and the three profiles change temperature and noise but not performance: the power limit is 64 W in all of them.

Building a small office or point-of-sale machine yourself, where a serial port, a second network port or a full-length second drive might be needed later.

Not for

The short chassis if any of that might matter, a single memory module, and anyone bothered by a fan that keeps changing speed rather than holding one.
