A well-known reviewer wrote that he could never hear this machine's fan, ever, with every core loaded. An owner returned his because the fan was clearly audible at idle, and said one of them must be deaf. Both are right, and a third person with a meter explains why: the fan never stops. It sits at about 1,700 rpm from the moment you switch on, and whether that reaches you depends on your desk, your room and your ears; from 75 cm away he could not hear it at all. His measurements also reveal a deliberately lazy fan curve. Under a pure processor load the cores pass 80 °C with the fan still idling, pass 90 °C with it still idling, and only after roughly five minutes does it begin to climb, settling near 2,200 rpm after twenty. It stays quiet because Apple lets the chip run hot. The one thing that does make it loud is loading processor and graphics together, which pushes it past 3,300 rpm and, in his words, to a speed he would not want to sit beside. Almost nothing does both at once. One owner, three years on, says those sustained temperatures make him wonder about long-term reliability.
