GMKtec NucBox M4

What owners say

Two labs and a Chinese reviewer had the NucBox M4 with the Core i9-11900H, a 2021 laptop chip in a large, almost all-metal box. Notebookcheck found it quiet under medium load, a steady 28 dB(A) at 15 cm, but about 45 dB(A) under an all-out stress test, louder than most mini PCs; the other two reviewers did not find it loud, though an unverified store review describes the fans running almost constantly. Under sustained load the i9 settles at 45 W and 2.7 GHz at 76 °C, and games keep it near 57 °C thanks to the big chassis. Idle draw is relatively high and load draw relatively low, peaking at 95 W. Air comes in through the top, so nothing should sit on the lid, and it tips over easily when stood upright without a stand. Two rear screws release the top cover to a 2.5-inch bay, an M.2 2280 slot, two memory slots and a removable Wi-Fi card. There is no Thunderbolt or eGPU support, and the USB-C port cannot power it. The Intel 2.5GbE controller suits Proxmox and ESXi. The UHD graphics are among Intel's slowest: fine for streaming and 4K60 playback, not for games. Notebookcheck's point on value is that Ryzen 7 6800H machines cost about the same with far faster graphics.

For whom

A quiet, well-built home-theatre PC or home server with Intel 2.5GbE and room for a 2.5-inch drive.

Not for

Gaming, anyone who needs Thunderbolt, and buyers who can get a Ryzen 7 6800H machine for the same money.
