GMKtec EVO-X1

GMKtec EVO-X1 is a compact option for development, content work and local AI experiments using AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and integrated Radeon 890M graphics. Software support and the memory required by a particular model matter more than theoretical AI ratings. Memory is fixed at purchase, so choose RAM capacity for the full intended lifespan. OCuLink allows a separate compatible external GPU dock; connect or disconnect it only with the PC powered off.

What owners say

Its lights cannot be turned off. Two reviewers looked for a firmware setting or an application and neither found one, and both report the LEDs staying lit with the machine shut down or asleep. One then noticed that the fan carrying those lights sits under the metal shell where nobody can see it, and suggested replacing it with a plain 70 mm one. That is the tone of this machine: good hardware with unfinished edges. The two labs disagree about how much it draws when off, and the gap is not small: one measured 3.7 W switched off and 12.6 asleep and called it a defect, the other measured 0.4 W. Their idle and load figures match almost exactly, which points at firmware rather than method, and the second reviewer had updated to a later version. Update it regardless, because the release notes say an AMD graphics card over OCuLink is not detected at all below version 1.03. The two also disagree about noise under load, 46 against 40 dB(A), while agreeing at idle. What it does unusually well is stay responsive: its interrupt latency is the lowest of everything its reviewer compared, and fifteen times better than a larger rival on this site.

For whom: An external graphics card over OCuLink in about the smallest box that will take one, once the firmware is up to date.
Not for: A bedroom or a dark room, because the lights cannot be switched off and stay on when the machine is not.
