The 40-core GPU version of the 2026 Mac Studio M5 Max pairs an 18-core CPU with a 16-core Neural Engine and 614 GB/s of unified-memory bandwidth. Dedicated video engines handle H.264, HEVC and ProRes, with AV1 decoding also supported. The four rear Thunderbolt 5 ports, 10Gb Ethernet and support for up to five external displays serve media production and large external-storage setups.

What owners say
The accounts of this 40-core GPU version include everyday development and tests that make its cooling audible. A MacRumors owner identifies the exact 18-core CPU/40-core GPU, 64 GB/1 TB configuration and heard its fans clearly during a Cinebench test. Wayne Dixon independently bought the same chip and 64 GB of memory, but with a 4 TB SSD, to replace his M1 Max Studio. His own development projects built noticeably sooner, while x265 encoding made the fans audible. That is evidence about his projects and workload, not a promise that every application gains by the same amount. He chose the larger memory and storage capacities intending to keep the machine for several years, and started with a clean installation instead of migrating old files. A Reddit owner of the exact 64 GB/1 TB version also values the internal-storage upgrade. Its published test image does not establish the behaviour of the 4 TB drive or another capacity. The common lesson is to choose the configuration around sustained work and storage needs, with fan noise under prolonged load included in the expectations. These first-week reports do not yet tell us how the model ages.
